Golden Like Me
Written by Brandi M. Green
"Sometimes, people have questions or don’t understand people that look like me. But I’m proud of the skin I’m in. I’m proud to have albinism and to be a Black girl, too."
~ Madi from Golden Like Me
Book Description:
Madison and Nathaniel both have albinism, a genetic condition that reduces the amount of pigment formed in the skin, hair, and eyes. They become fast friends after randomly meeting one another while they’re out with their families. These young children both learn the joys of being in community with someone who shares their condition.

Testimonials
We have the same face! Golden Like Me celebrates albinism and the special discovery of likeness amongst children. Madi and Nate are awed and excited to meet someone who resembles them. They recognize the similarities and differences in their families and embark on a newfound friendship. The illustrations capture the emotion of the story while clearly depicting characters of color. The author does an amazing job of explaining a condition while simultaneously affirming cultural identity using language easily accessible to children. As a person with Albinism, I would have loved to have read this book when I was young. Golden Like Me is a must have addition to one’s personal library.”

If only there had been a book like this when I was little. I was 21 years old when I finally saw another African American person with albinism. It is so wonderful that this book exists so that the real life “Madi’s” and “Nate’s” can see themselves reflected back in such a lovely and positive manner.”
